This fall Dining Services launched a refillable mug coffee program. The great thing about the program that it saves you time too! At most coffee houses bringing your own cup means standing in line with the rest of the caffeine-starved populous, waiting your turn at the register and then FINALLY handing your mug to the barista to get your fill-up.

The new program at Bruin Cafe lets you skip all the waiting. Just like the express lunch service, to participate in the Bring-your-own-cup you simply walk up to the express line with any reusable mug and get your pastry and coffee right where you swipe! No ticket. No waiting. Simply fabulous.

For those closet environmentalist out there, you can even get a reusable cup that looks like a disposable one.

The road to an Organic Herb Garden

Community Gardens are a great way to engage residents and grow some fresh, organic food.

In order to bring some of that spirit to UCLA, we are going building a new organic herb garden right here on The Hill. The herbs grown in the garden will be used to prepare the food in the dining halls. What a great way to keep our sauces and seasons tasting fresh!

We found the perfect spot right behind Delta Terrace:

It gets lots of sun and it already has beds ready for planting!

With a little help from the E3 Garden Coordinator and some volunteer gardeners we will be enjoying delicious rosemary and thyme sauces in no time.

Trayless Update

Beginning winter quarter 2009, Hedrick Residental Restaurant went trayless.

The program was a great success. The trayless program eliminated the daily need to wash thousands of trays at Hedrick Hall. As a result of the reduced washing needs, the Hedrick trayless program saved over 6,000 gallons of water every month.

Given the great success of this program, Rieber Hall will be going trayless this fall.

Personal Challenge: try going trayless everywhere, even when you are out on the town. The Swedish meatballs at Ikea taste just as good tray or no tray.

Recycling by Number

Ever wonder what the number inside the recycling symbol actually stands for?

With this info at your fingertips you will be able to wow all your friends during your next zero waste party.

On plastics, the # inside the recycling symbol indicates the type of resin used to produce that plastic:

#1: polyethylene terephthalate (PET) Ex. Soda bottles
#2: high density polyethylene (HDPE) Ex. Plastic grocery bags
#3: polyvinyl chloride (PVC) Ex. Plastic water pipes
#4: low density polyethylene (LDPE) Ex. Rings on 6-packs of soda
#5: polypropylene (PP) Ex. Food containers
#6: polystyrene (PS) Ex. Hard plastic & Styrofoam food containers
#7: other Ex. nylon, biodegradable plastics, fiberglass, etc.
